Apple recently unveiled the iPhone 12, which has lots of people considering a mobile phone upgrade. But even Android fans have plenty of new smartphones to choose from with features that make their old phones already seem outdated.

If you’re in the market for a new mobile phone, the experts at Quadro Communications ask the following questions to establish which phone best fits your needs:

What type of phone are you currently using?

Which is another way of asking: do you want an Apple iPhone, favoured by 45 percent of Canadians, or an Android phone, 31 percent of which are sold in this country by Samsung? Unless you hate the operating system you are using, and are simply looking for a faster model with a bigger screen or improved features, consider upgrading to a newer version of the device you already have because you will be more familiar with it.

Do you have any other devices?

One of the advantages of owning smart devices like tablets or smart watches that are manufactured by the same company with the same operating system is that they will communicate more easily with each other, enabling you to get the most out of the technology you own.

What is your budget?

Phones can be purchased outright, or you can pay a monthly fee to use them.  Figure out how much you are willing to pay and whether you can afford a top-of-the-line mobile phone or whether you’d be better purchasing a more inexpensive model.

What do you like or dislike about your current device?

If you’re thinking of changing phones, it might be because there’s something you don’t like about it.  Look at the features of other manufacturers and establish how they are better than what you own.

Are you a power user, or does technology baffle you?

If your kids are always explaining to you how your phone works, then there’s no sense buying something with too many bells and whistles. If all you really want to do is make phone calls, then a simple phone like the ZTE Cymbal 2 Flip Phone may be the right choice for you.

How much memory do you need?

The amount of storage on your phone will limit the amount of music, videos, photos and other data that you carry around with you.  As a rule of thumb, buy as much memory as you can afford because it fills up fast.

How big a screen do you want?

Some people prefer larger screens because they provide more visual real estate while others dislike them because they make phones bulkier and don’t fit into pockets easily. Pay attention to the size specifications listed on each device to determine how the phone will look and feel.

Is the phone camera important to you?

For many people, the camera is the most important part of a smartphone. Apple’s phones are well known for having top-notch camera’s, buy may Android phones are catching up, so research the specifications of the model’s you’re considering.
