I
have a 56K modem. Why do I connect at a slower rate?
Modems need several things to get a fast connection
*Short distance from your house to the Quadro Communications Central
Office
56K modems take advantage of the upgraded digital phone network. The call
route between your home and the ISP must have only ONE Analog to Digital
conversion (this is not guaranteed as voice lines do not require this-
obtain the x2 guide for more information). The highest theoretical connection
speed using 56K is 53333 (the Industry Canada regulated limit). The actual
connection speed will fluctuate. You may obtain a V.34 (i.e. 28800 connection)
if there is more than one Analog to Digital conversion. If the call route
has only one Analog to Digital conversion you will obtain an x2 connection,
which may range from 33333 to 53333. This connection speed varies because
there is an analog portion of a 56K connection.
* Correct installation and initialization of the modem
A modem must be installed correctly to work correctly. If you buy a modem,
make sure you install all of the software it came with. Also make sure
that the computer knows what kind of modem you are using. It maybe tempting
to set a modem up as a Generic or Quadroes Compatible, but if it is not
setup exactly, it may never work the way it was designed to work. Also,
look at the book your modem came with and get to know the AT Command Set.
These little codes will help you set the modem up properly. When in doubt
call your modem manufacturer. They know best.
Why
do I keep getting disconnected?
Getting disconnected can have many causes; however, if you are actively
working in the Internet, Quadro Communications will not disconnect you.
Common causes for disconnection are
* Insufficient memory
* Idle time-out. (Not actively working on the Internet).
* Poor quality modem
* Improperly setup modem
* Incompatible or outdated modem
Insufficient memory
In times of memory shortage, your computer will drop the phone line connection.
Even if you have plenty of RAM installed, if you have too many programs
running at once you may run out of memory and be disconnected. Make sure
that you run as few programs at once as possible. Quadro Communications
suggests at least 64 megabytes of RAM for optimal performance in Windows
and Macintosh computers.
Idle
time-outs.
If you are on the Internet and do not transfer information of any kind
for 20 minutes, the computers will disconnect from each other. This feature
safe-guards you from leaving your computer connected to the Internet unintentially.
If you want to write a long e-mail, do so off-line and then connect when
you are ready to send it, or read that important article you found after
you disconnect.
Poor quality modem
The better the modem, the more dependable the connection. "Win modems"
and Apple "Geoport modems" are inexpensive, but may not provide
the type of quality or dependability you want. If you have not purchased
a 56K modem and are currently shopping, it is our recommendation that
you have a very close look at a USR (U.S. Robotics) modem 56K V.90. No
matter which type of modem you decide upon, please keep your self informed
and maintained with the most recent version of "Driver" for
that modem. Although 56K is almost impossible, it is possible to attain
levels as high as 45K with the proper and most recent driver for your
modem.
Improperly setup modem
Unless you are able to work on your own computer, have your modem installed
by a professional. Before you take it home ensure you actually see it
connect and are able to use it. If a modem is setup as Generic it may
be installed incorrectly. Read all paperwork with the modem and get familiar
with the AT command set. These instructions tell your computer how to
operate properly and using them can solve many connection problems.
Modem incompatibility
Older 14.4K or 9600 bit modems may be to old to work with new high-speed
56K modems. They are horribly slow on today's Internet. Make sure you
are using at least a 28.8K modem from a reliable manufacturer. "John
Doe" may make a 56K, $19.00 modem that fits your computer, but chances
are that "John Doe's" modems may not be compatible with Quadro
Communications modems or make a reliable connection.
How
do I get Windows to save my password?
If save password is not available or will not check in the "Connect
To" screen, do the following:
* Double click on My Computer.
* Double click on the Control Panel
* Double click on Network
* If there is Microsoft Family Log-on in there, remove it.
* Check and see if the Client for Microsoft Networks component is in there
* If not, click on the Add button below, then click on Client and click
Add to the right.
* Choose Microsoft on the left hand side and on the right hand side highlight
Client for Microsoft Networks
* Click the OK button. This will bring you back to the Network Control
Panel.
* Click on the Identification tab at the top and place your username in
the Computer Name field. Workgroup, and the Computer Description can be
anything.
* Click OK at the bottom of the screen and your machine will ask if it
can restart, answer YES. Once the machine boots back up it is possible
that it will request a username and password to log onto Windows, you
can put in your username, and password for windows, or click cancel.
* Click OK. It will ask for confirmation of the password, if you entered
one.
* Click OK.
* You should now be able to put a checkmark in the Save Password field
of your "Connect To" screen. (You will need to connect successfully
one time for this to take effect)
If the
Client for Microsoft Networks is present do the following:
* Double click on My Computer.
* Double click on Control Panel.
* Double click on Passwords.
* Click on the User Profile tab and make sure that 'Users Can Customize
Their Settings' has a black dot next to it. At this point you can click
OK at the bottom of the screen and your machine will ask if it can restart,
answer YES. Once the machine boots back up it is possible that it will
request a username and password to log onto Windows, put in your username,
and password or click cancel.
* Click OK. It will ask for confirmation of the password.
* Click OK. You should now be able to put a checkmark in the Save Password
field of your "Connect To" screen. (You will need to connect
successfully one time for this to take effect)
If neither
of these options has helped it might be necessary to reset the password
files on your machine.
* Go to your Start button.
* Click on Find, then Files or Folders, You should have a blinking cursor
in the Named field, type *.pwl
* Click on Find. This process may take a few minutes depending on the
speed of your PC. Once it has found the necessary files, highlight them
at the bottom of the screen
* Press the Delete key on your keyboard. Now close the Find window and
go through the process of restarting the machine. Once the machine boots
back up it is possible that it will request a username and password to
log onto Windows, put in your username, but leave the password blank.
* Click OK. It will ask for confirmation of the password, just leave the
password blank.
* Click OK. You should now be able to put a checkmark in the Save Password
field of your "Connect To" screen. (You will need to connect
successfully one time for this to take effect)
If none of these options has been successful in helping you save the password
it's possible that there is a problem at the OS (Operating System) level
on the machine. At this point it will be necessary to contact a third
party technician to take a look at the machine.
Can
I check my e-mail when I am out of town?
If you have a connection to the Internet, you can access your Quadro Communications
e-mail. There are two ways to check your email while away from home as
outlined below.
E-mail Client
An Email client is any e-mail program that uses an e-mail server. Eudora,
Netscape, Internet Mail and News, Pegasus and Outlook Express are good
examples of E-mail Clients. Open the e-mail program, find the preferences
or settings and change the mail servers to mail.quadro.net and place your
username in the username space, all lower case letters. Some Clients have
an identity section; you will need to put your username and e-mail address
in there as well. Remember your username is the first part of our e-mail
address. When you check mail, it will then look for your mailbox at quadro.net
Via World Wide Web.
First go to www.quadro.net. and click "Check E-mail". Type your
username and password in the locations it asks for and then click "login".
You will have access to your emails stored on our server. You may read,
reply, forward or delete emails. Your emails will stay on our server until
you delete them or download them through your E-mail client. R
I
just wrote a letter, but now it won't send my mail. Why?
This is normally caused by an idle time-out. This is a period of time
when you did not send or receive any data of any kind from the Internet.
If you sit for 20 minutes without sending or receiving data, the computers
will disconnect and you will get an error when trying to send mail.
You can avoid this by trying one of the following:
* Read and write mail off-line and connect when you are ready to send.
* When sitting idle, periodically reach up and click the check mail button.
That will create enough activity to keep you online.
* Make sure that you have the proper servers in the mail preferences.
The SMTP server is smtp.quadro.net and POP Server is mail.quadro.net
* You can also simply move the mail window out of the way, disconnect
from the Internet and then reconnect. Then you can try sending again.
It should go right through.
What
does "Does not have a DNS Entry" mean?
This could be one of 3 things.
* You are not actively connected to the Internet. Either the phone didn't
dial or you have been disconnected. Always make sure that the phone dials
every time you want to get onto the Internet.
* Your computer is configured incorrectly to talk to others on the Internet.
Make sure all of the DNS servers are entered correctly. If you are unsure
of how to input these into your computer, call our tech support staff
for help.
* You have either typed the address incorrectly or the website doesn't
exist.
What is JAVA and why does it give me so many
problems?
JAVA is a computing language invented by Sun Microsystems that allows
all computers to see the exact same thing when on the Internet. No matter
what brand of computer you have, or what web browser you use, you can
see exactly the same thing as your neighbour. The benefits include providing
moving pictures, sound and more dynamic pages than what we used to see,
but it can give problems.
If you have a relatively fast computer like a Pentium II or a PowerMac,
at least 64MB of RAM and are using a version "4" or higher browser
like Netscape Communicator or Internet Explorer, JAVA will work fine in
most cases. JAVA runs poorly in Windows 3.1, but works great in Windows
XP 95/98/NT/2000 and Macintosh.
If you are loading a webpage that has JAVA on it and stop loading in the
middle, you will receive errors. To get rid of the errors, hold down your
"Shift" key and click "Reload"/"Refresh"
on your browser. That will ignore the cache and reload the page, JAVA
and all.
Sometimes web designers place JAVA on the page incorrectly which can cause
problems. Just remember, if you have everything you need to run JAVA enabled
sites and it still doesn't work, then stay away from that site.
Can
I use any web browser I choose?
Some pages look better in Netscape, some look better in Explorer. Some
computers run Netscape better and some run Explorer better. We suggest
having both on the computer and using the one you find is most reliable
and offers the best Internet experience.
Why does it take so long to log on?
There are a couple of possibilities to look at here, and we'll look at
the more common of the two choices first.
First Possibility
It's possible that the machine is attempting to load unnecessary protocols
and this could cause a delay when attempting to log on to the network.
To check the possibility of this do the following:
* Double click on My Computer.
* Double click on Dial up Networking
* You should see your Quadro Communications connection in this window.
* RIGHT click with your right mouse button on the Quadro Communications
icon and a small menu should pop up.
* LEFT click on Properties.
* Now, depending on the version of Windows that you have you will see
either a tab at the top or a button in the lower right hand corner that
says Server Types, click on it.
* Under Advanced Options, make sure that there is no check mark in the
box labeled Log Onto Network. If there is, just click on it once with
your left mouse button and it should go away.
* Now, under Allowed Network Protocols, make sure that IPX/SPX Compatible
protocol and NetBEUI are NOT checked, if they are, click on them one at
a time and remove the check marks.
* Next, click on the TCP/IP SETTINGS button to the lower right, and make
sure there is a mark next to SERVER ASSIGNED IP ADDRESS at the top of
the screen, then, in the middle of the screen, there should also be a
mark next to SPECIFY NAME SERVER ADDRESSES, and the PRIMARY DNS should
be 216.46.129.10 the SECONDARY DNS should be 216.46.142.10 and both of
the WINS numbers should be all zeros. Both boxes at the bottom should
have checks in them.
* Depending on the version of Windows that you have you will need to click
OK until you exit the Properties menu for the Quadro Communications connection.
* Close the Dial Up Networking Window, close My Computer.
* Now you can attempt to log back onto the Internet and enjoy the quick
log on process.
Second Possibility
When you attempt to dial the Internet it is normal to hear "noises"
coming from the modem, this is referred to as the negotiation stage. These
may sound similar to the sound a fax machine makes when dialing another
fax machine.
This "noisy"
process normally only take 5-8 seconds when connecting to the Internet.
If the negotiation seems to go on forever or for 20-30 seconds, but your
modem does eventually log on, it can still indicate a problem. You might
try placing two commas after the phone number that you use to dial into
Quadro Communications, this should correct the problem.
What
is a type 1, 2, 3, 10 or 11 error on a Macintosh?
The properly maintained Mac is very reliable and will give very few errors,
however if your Mac is giving you Type XX errors, they can be very frustrating.
Check below for a few tips on eradicating these errors
Type 10 or 11
This error generally only happens in PowerMacs running System 7.6, 7.5.5
or 7.5.3. It is a bug in the 68K emulator and can only be resolved by
upgrading to System 7.6.1 or newer. If you are running a PowerMac upgrade
your RAM to at least 64megs and install System 8 or later for optimal
performance. System 8 is available in most major computer retailers and
via mail-order.
Type 1, 2 or 3
These can be resolved in one of two ways.
Disable all 3rd party extensions and control panels using the Extensions
Manager inside of your control panels folder. Then check to see if the
error continues to come up. Also check to see if you have maintained functionality
of the computer. Check to see if you can still print and the modem dials.
Re-enable control panels until such time as the error pops back up again.
Then you may use your Extensions manager to create a "Safe Set"
that will not give you problems.
Click one time on the program that is giving you the error. Go to the
File Menu and go to Get Info. On the lower right hand side is a preferred
size. You may try raising that in increments of 1000 until the problem
disappears or you run out of memory. Make sure that the program is closed
when attempting this and that you are clicking on the actual program,
not an alias or a folder.
On
a Macintosh, what does "Connected at an unknown rate" mean?
When using a Macintosh and the PPP / Remote Access control panel, you
must have the correct modem chosen in order to connect efficiently. If
you do not have the correct modem set up, you will get the error message:
Connecting at an Unknown Rate.
* Go to the Modem control panel and choose the exact modem that you own.
If it is not available, contact your modem manufacturer about getting
the proper CCL files for your modem. CCL files are small files that go
into the Modem Scripts folder that is located in the Extensions Folder
inside of your System Folder. These CCL files tell your modem how to talk
to other modems. Without them, PPP will not connect correctly.
* If you cannot locate the proper CCL files, try placing two commas after
the phone number your computer is dialing. That should allow it to connect
at a slower rate until you find the files you need. You can always check
your modem manufacturers website for the latest CCL files.
